I have a brand new Vista Home Premium set-up with a dead Hitachi 320gb SATA after using the system for 2 weeks. I'm back to my two IDE drives, which work fine. My 7950GX2 kicks butt, and the latest forceware drivers seem to work fine...SLI enabled. I've run into problems with selecting multiple files (Ctrl A) at times. I have to reset my folder options to their default settings to help with that problem. Overall, Vista is working pretty smooth for me and the Core 2 Duo E6800 is lightning fast. 2gb Corsair helps speed things up as well. Gaming: I don't play Quake 4 anymore, but I run UT 2004 with graphics cranked to "Holy S!$T" settings. The game is fluid...absolutely no issues with gaming graphics (5.9 rating)!

Bottom line: I say MS make a Vista SP1/SP2 patch, which will turn your Vista set-up into stable and reliable system MS had originally intended. Hmm, maybe they can call the next patch "Vienna", which changes your Vista computer into a new Vienna system, complete with new themes, colors, bootskins, wallpapers, logon screens, dreamscenes (even for Basic and Premium), etc, etc.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-23T18:28:43</pubDateParsed>
Qx9 on Vista Sp 2 or Windows Vienna? But I am currently running Vista Home Premium, and I have another computer I use for a server, which is currently running Slackware, and has in the past ran Red Hat and Debian. Linux machines are very, and I mean very reliable. Mine ran for many months without ever being rebooted or powered down, and it only went down then because I shut it down to upgrade hardware. It takes some getting used to, but most versions of linux have very nice GUI interfaces - Blackbox, Fluxbox, Gnome, KDE, etc, so you dont have to stare at black screen and white letters and do everything with shell commands.

Vista seems to run quite good for me. It does have it quirks, and yes it's still somewhat buggy, but alot of the ideas implemented are things that needed to be done. It runs very fast for most things I do, the major problems arent with the OS itself, but other companies getting up to speed with their programs and drivers. I'm having to run nvidia beta drivers just to get my SLI working, and it doesnt work great. The soundcard drivers are lacking as well(creative). I've not had any program or hardware NOT work with it as of yet, though some dont work that as well as they should.

<pubDateParsed>2008-07-23T18:28:43</pubDateParsed>
Insidian on Vista Sp 2 or Windows Vienna?
The cost of purchasing (or building) a high end PC to enable good performance with Vista is already closing in on, or has surpassed, the cost of a Mac.

The only issue now (in my mind) is purchasing the software for the Mac platform, which I can accomplish by 2009.

I like PC's quite a bit, but the overall cost of living on the 'bleeding edge' has dampened the enthusiasm I once had. A machine that runs some office programs, some publication and graphics editing programs, and has multi-media capabilities is all I need. I like the performance in the Mac for these basic needs better than the performance in the Vista PC (and I have a desktop that has a Vista Experience Rating of '5.3').
